Traditions

The Christmas season is easier to manage when you plan for it as a family. Have a family meeting, as early as possible in the Fall, to sit down and make plans for the entire holiday season.

Mark all activities on your family calendar

Make lists

Allocate responsibilities to each family member

Post your lists and calendar in a prominent, easy-to-ready place in your home

Tell people who are special to you that your appreciate them--co workers, bosses or employees, pastors, etc.

Pick out a "Living Tree" then plant it after the holidays.

Chop down your own Christmas tree at a Christmas tree farm with your family.

Make your own greeting cards

Have an old-fashioned caroling party

Build an ornament collection for each child in the family

Invite someone for Christmas dinner that would otherwise be alone

Give a gift of your time to a hurried friend, aging relative or a sick friend. Perhaps you can watch a child while a parent goes shopping or take an elderly friend shopping.

Bake a birthday cake for Jesus and make it an important part of your Christmas meal.

Norwegians celebrate Little Christmas Eve on the 23rd of December. The custom was Americanized in my family by letting each child have one gift to open. We always looked forward to Little Christmas Eve--at least all the surprise wasn't limited to just one day.
