While different in appearance than their graphical off-line counterparts, on-line newsletters still benefit from a pleasing format. Whatever you set as your format, keep it consistent from issue to issue.

Elements to incorporate in your e-mail newsletter:

• Create an identifable masthead that provides identity for your e-mail newsletter. At a minimum, the masthead should contain the publication name, volume, issue, and date.

• New subscribers may need their memories jogged as to how they came to receive your publication. You may choose to insert a line that tells readers how they qualified for the mailing.

• Create an index or table of contents that lists the topics in the order that they are presented. Speed readers or scanners will appreciate your structure. To facilitate scanning, number the items in the table of contents. Also number the topic headings so that readers can easily locate a specific topic.

• Subscribers who scan or speed read will especially appreciate identifiable headings. Whether you use white space or a special format, make new topics easy to locate.

• Include information on how to subscribe, unsubscribe and post in each issue. Always include the URL for archived issues as well. Whether it appears at the beginning or the end of the issue doesn't matter. Long time readers may appreciate this information appearing at the end of the document.

• Include your copyright and trademark information. More and more research is being done on the Internet and bibliography standards are emerging for the Internet. If your information should not be quoted without your permission, clearly state your policy.

• Clearly indicate the end of the issue.
